San Jose Country Club Jacksonville, Florida Rich in History

GOLF

Story By: Ashley Looper, Staff Writer

Jacksonville, Florida, there is a gem of a golf course named San Jose Country Club. Back in 1925, a group of folks had a bright idea: why not make a cool spot for golf lovers? So, they did just that, with a top-notch golf course by famous designer Donald Ross.

The club quickly became a hot spot for the city's high rollers. Even during tough times like the Great Depression and World War II, it stayed strong, giving folks a place to hang out and have fun.

The golf course has become better with age, becoming known as one of Florida's best. With tricky greens and bunkers, it challenged golfers of all skill levels. Built on approximately 100 acres of land, the 18-hole golf course plays at 7,043 yards from the professional tees. With five varying tees, this par 72 course offers challenges and rewards for golfers of all skill levels. In 2020, San Jose Country Club worked with golf course architect, Dan Schlegel, to restore parts of the course back to the original 1925 Donald Ross design. The modern practice facility includes a putting green, practice range, and short game area.

As the years rolled on, San Jose Country Club became more than just a place to play golf. It was where families bonded over Sunday brunches, where friendships blossomed on the tennis courts, and where memories were made at countless social events.

With each passing generation, the club continued to evolve, adapting to the changing times while staying true to its roots. Modern amenities like a state-of-the-art fitness center and gourmet dining options complemented the timeless charm of the original clubhouse.

But amidst all the upgrades and changes, one thing remained constant: the sense of belonging that members felt as they walked through the club's doors. Whether teeing off on the first hole or enjoying a quiet evening on the veranda, there is a feeling of camaraderie in every corner of San Jose Country Club.

Named Northeast Florida’s Merchandiser of the Year-Private & Section by the PGA of America for a combined 15 years, San Jose Country Club members are provided with an 1,800-square foot award-winning golf shop to accommodate all of their needs. In addition, the Director of Instruction has been named Teacher of the Year-Northern Chapter by the PGA of America from 2020-2022.

San Jose Country Club has partnered with Operation 36 to provide the membership with a curriculum-based program for Ladies and Juniors as well. Operation 36 is an eight-week course designed for beginners and provides them with weekly instruction as well as 9-hole play days.

San Jose Country Club proudly offers a Men’s Golf Association (MGA), Ladies Golf Association (LGA) and PGA Junior Leagues and Clinics. Today, the club's still going strong, welcoming golfers and friends alike. It's a place where memories are made, and the love of golf keeps on swinging.
